If you are looking to learn more about Adult Support and Protection in Scotland, this page is for you.

In Scotland, Adult Support and Protection is where services in organisations like, Orkney Islands Council, Police Scotland and NHS Orkney work together to keep vulnerable adults safe, happy and healthy. Where we say “Safe” we mean being protected from or not exposed to risk of danger actual danger or being harmed.

Adults are anyone aged 16 years or older who may be at risk of harm due to:

  • Mental Illness
  • Old Age
  • Frailty or physical weakness
  • Visual or hearing impairment

All adults at risk of harm have the right to be safe and protected.

The Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 is designed to protect those adults who are unable to safeguard their own interests and are at risk of harm because they are affected by:

  • disability
  • mental disorder
  • illness
  • physical or mental infirmity

Harm means all harm including self-harm and neglect.
