Appropriate Adults

What is an Appropriate Adult?

An Appropriate Adult is someone who helps you communicate with the police. They work with all levels of police services not just Police Scotland.

There are a few conditions for getting support from an Appropriate Adult these are:

  • You must be over the age of 16
  • You must have a difficulty communicating due to either having a:
    • Mental Disorder
    • Learning Disability
    • Personality Disorder
    • Brain Injury
    • Dementia or
    • Neurodiversity such as autism of ADHD

These are set out in the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003
